Cosmetic Bonding at Harry Albers DDS
Your teeth are an incredibly important feature in your mouth. They perform many different functions, including biting, chewing, and aiding in proper speech. They also play a very important aesthetic role. Your teeth are a major component in your smile. Any imperfections, no matter how small they might be, can significantly impact how your smile looks as well as your confidence. Flaws in your teeth can also impact the impressions you make and how others see you. At Harry Albers DDS, we can improve the quality of your smile with cosmetic bonding.

What is Cosmetic Dental Bonding?

There are many different types of minor flaws that can significantly impact the appearance of your teeth, and the quality of your smile. These imperfections include small chips or cracks in the enamel, gaps between your teeth, teeth that are small or misshapen, and discoloration.

Cosmetic bonding is a quick, simple cosmetic procedure that is performed to eliminate the appearance of minor flaws in your teeth, improving their appearance and the quality of your smile. This procedure involves the use of a composite resin material. Composite resin is a versatile substance made up of plastic, fine glass, and other materials. It can be used to fill cracks and chips, eliminate gaps, and transform the size or shape of the teeth. Composite resin is a tooth-colored material that blends in with the color of your teeth, providing a completely natural appearance.

How is Cosmetic Bonding Done?

The process for cosmetic bonding is quick, non-invasive, and completely painless. We begin by cleaning your teeth. Next, an acid etch is applied to the treatment areas. This creates a rough texture on your teeth to help the composite resin bond more effectively. The acid etch is then washed off and your teeth are thoroughly dried. We then apply the composite resin and shape it to achieve the ideal results. Once you are satisfied with the appearance of your teeth, and your smile, we then use a specialized light to cure, or dry, the material. The whole process typically takes about 30 minutes to complete.

Taking Care of Your Cosmetic Bonding

Cosmetic bonding is fairly strong and can withstand most normal daily wear and tear. However, it is not indestructible. Bonding can chip, crack, or shatter under too much pressure. Avoid biting or chewing on things that are too hard, such as popcorn kernels, ice, your fingernails, or packaging.

The composite resin material can also stain. Limit or avoid foods or beverages that can stain and quit smoking. If the composite resin stains, it cannot be whitened. Instead, it needs to be replaced. Other than these few considerations, you can take care of your bonding just like you care for your natural teeth. Brush your teeth at least twice a day, floss once daily, and have your teeth professionally cleaned and examined twice a year.
