What is Botox?Botox is a form of botulinum toxin A, a neurotoxin derived from Clostridium botulinum. It is a purified protein that has been cleared by the FDA to treat cosmetic concerns as well as some medical concerns. Botox is injected directly into the skin through a fine-tipped syringe. For cosmetic concerns, it can be used to reduce, or completely get rid of, fine lines and wrinkles, leaving you with smoother, younger looking skin.
How Does Botox Work?Botox is an injectable treatment. It is strategically injected into the skin to address a variety of different issues. Once in the skin, the Botox goes to work blocking the nerves that tell certain muscles in the face to contract. This prevents the muscles from contracting, preventing the skin from creasing. As a result, the skin can smooth out, reducing, or eliminating, fine lines and wrinkles.
The process for getting Botox injections is simple and straightforward. Using a fine-tipped needle, we inject the Botox directly into the skin at the treatment areas. There is no need for a local anesthetic. Most patients only experience a slight pinch or minor discomfort when the needle is inserted. You may experience some slight bruising, but it should dissipate in just a few days. It typically takes anywhere from 3 to 7 days to see the full effects of your treatment.
What Can Botox Treat?Botox can be used to treat a variety of different cosmetic concerns. Common concerns addressed with Botox include:
Botox can also be used to treat certain medical issues, such as excessive sweating, chronic migraines, muscle spasms, and TMJ disorder.
Is Botox Safe?Botox is FDA approved and safe to use. We are highly trained and experienced in performing Botox injections. While the procedure is considered safe, there are still a few side effects that you should be aware of. These side effects include drooping eyelids, muscle freezing, and facial asymmetry. There are a few more serious side effects, but these effects are rare and include trouble swallowing, trouble speaking, and difficulty speaking.
Are the Results of Botox Permanent? In short, no, the results of Botox injections are not permanent. On average, Botox injections last approximately 3 to 4 months. As the effects wear off, the signal between nerves and muscles is restored, enabling the muscles to begin contracting again. To maintain the results, and prevent the reappearance of lines and wrinkles, periodic retreatments are needed.
Botox can effectively reduce, and even eliminate, the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improving the appearance of your skin, the quality of your smile, and your overall confidence. For more information, and to find out if Botox is right for you, call Harry Albers DDS today at (707) 806-0545.
